My Service
Cold Warrior
I enlisted in the U.S. Army after my freshman year in college. I served four years active duty during the Cold War. After intensive education at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA learning Russian, I was trained at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, TX and Fort Devens, MA in signals intelligence analysis and its integration with electronic warfare assets. I served in the 108th MI Battalion, a tactical intelligence unit on the East German border. There, I attended an advanced, immersion Russian course. My team provided intelligence analysis and reports to the 8th Infantry Division, the DIA and, on occasion one or more civilian intelligence agencies. I was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant (E-5).
